Fun things to do in Bogor

Looking to get a bit off the beaten track on the island of Java, Indonesia? If you’re looking for fun time away from the beaches of Bali and the nightlife that can be found in the big city of Jakarta, Bogor is the break that you’ve been looking for.

While this destination is well known to most local Indonesians, the lack of traditional Western tourism means that the most common booking engines may not have all the properties that you can book in this city.

1) Check out the botanical gardens

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Bogor is its Botanical Garden. Given the fact that Bogor is in one of the rainiest parts of Java, its 210 acres are home to a wide variety of tropical plants that thrive in this damp climate.

Founded by the Dutch during the colonial period, the Bogor Botanical Garden is the oldest park of its kind in Southeast Asia, and it leads the region in agricultural research as a result of its expansive grounds and its favorable weather conditions.

2) Explore the Bogor Presidential Palace

One of six presidential palaces throughout Indonesia, the most recently elected president in this country has moved his office to this place as of 2015.

Despite this fact, publicly available tours continue on this ornate property, though you will have to book at least five days in advance.

If you haven’t thought that far ahead, you may be able to squeeze in on a tour at the last minute if you ask, but if you can’t, the immaculately sculpted gardens and the magnificent exterior of the palace make a visit here worthwhile regardless of whether you are able to proceed inside.

3) Go whitewater rafting

With all the rain that Bogor receives over the course of a year, it should come as no surprise that this place is well known for its whitewater rafting.

With rivers that have rapids that range from class II to class IV, single travelers looking for an injection of adrenaline will find it on the active waterways that can be found in the Bogor area.

4) Commune with nature at Mount Gede Pangrango National Park

Protecting the volcanoes that loom over the city of Bogor and the wilderness that surrounds it, the best place to commune with nature in this area is at Mount Gede Pangrango National Park.

More than half the bird species that exist on the island of Java can be found here, as well as a number of endangered species that includes the silvery gibbon.
